Noticing what attention alone cannot reveal

Coffee cup and notebook signifying noticing attention and energy together

There are times when the energy you want to give what matters doesn't always match what is available.

You have a list of things, meaningful things that need completion.

But your energy is already running low.

You think “Okay, if I can just focus…”

And you push yourself to get it done.

Stress begins to build.

In your thoughts.

In your body.

In the quiet pressure you carry to get it done.

You get it done.

Or you don't.

And frustration, guilt, or pressure begin to grow.

You plan to tackle it tomorrow.

Next week.

When things settle down.

When you have more energy.

When your mind feels clearer.

When you can finally give it the attention it deserves.

And then tomorrow comes.

And the energy still isn't there.

Often low energy is associated with a lack of motivation.

A lack of focus.

A lack of care.

But caring is not the problem.

And for most purpose-driven builders, a lack of focus is not the challenge.

And if we weren’t motivated, we wouldn’t be building.

The challenge is caring well for the many meaningful things asking for our time, attention, and energy at the same time.

Earlier this month we explored attention.

How attention is a resource.

How what receives our attention often receives our care.

But attention isn't the only thing worth noticing.

Energy tells us something too.

Energy Tells a Story

Many of us build our plans around ideal energy.

The energy we hope to have.

The energy we wish we had.

The energy we had six months ago.

And sometimes we overlook the reality of the season we're actually in.

The meaningful things already receiving our attention.

The responsibilities we're carrying.

The decisions we're navigating.

The things quietly taking up space in our minds and hearts.

All affecting us differently.

Some leave us energized.

Some leave us tired.

Some stay with us long after the moment has passed.

This doesn't automatically mean something is right or wrong.

It doesn't mean something should stay or go.

It simply means there is information worth paying attention to.

Because energy often reveals what attention alone cannot.

A Fuller Look at Focus

Earlier this month, we defined focus as the direction of attention.

But attention and energy often go hand in hand.

Where our attention goes, our energy often follows.

And how something affects our energy often influences where our attention naturally wants to go.

Perhaps focus is the thoughtful direction of both attention and energy toward what matters most in this season.

Caring well for what has been entrusted to us.

Focus is attention and energy moving together.

And they both reveal things worth noticing. Worth understanding.

Discernment as Understanding

Discernment is often thought of as the ability to make the right decisions.

But before discernment helps us decide, it helps us understand.

It helps us notice patterns.

What consistently receives our attention?

What consistently drains our energy?

What consistently replenishes it?

What continues asking for space?

What feels important right now?

These aren't questions to judge yourself with.

These are invitations to understanding.

Understanding what needs care.

What needs boundaries.

What needs attention.

And what may need to wait.

Not stricter discipline.

Not harsher self-evaluation.

Not better optimization.

More discernment.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the next step isn't trying harder.

Sometimes the next step is paying closer attention to what your attention and energy have been telling you all along.

Noticing doesn't solve everything.

But it does help us understand what is really happening beneath the surface.

And understanding is often where focused stewardship begins.

Putting It into Action

This week, take a few moments to notice the relationship between your attention and your energy.

As you move through your days, ask yourself:

What has been receiving my attention?

How has it been affecting my energy?

What patterns am I beginning to notice?

Don't rush to fix anything.

Notice what your attention and energy may be revealing.

Understanding often begins there.

Sometimes it can be difficult to make sense of the patterns emerging beneath the surface.

If This Resonated with You

Sometimes simply noticing your attention and energy may be revealing reveals more than we expect.

If this met you where you are today, I'd love to hear what stood out to you. Feel free to share your thoughts below, and I'll respond.

And if you know another purpose-driven builder navigating many meaningful things in this season, feel free to pass it along.
