How seeing beyond their surface deepens your vision’s impact

Overwhelmed by all the other visions surrounding you

Have you ever been in a season where you just wanted someone to see you - to understand what you’re walking through, what’s going on inside, and help?

We’ve all felt that at some point - wanting to be seen, hoping someone sees us.

Especially in our moments of need, loss of hope, or uncertainty.

That’s why you build what you’re building: to help them - the ones your vision was meant to reach.

People who are hurting, hoping, or simply want their life to be better.

As purpose-driven visionaries, we have the beautiful privilege to do that for others:

to see beyond the surface and help people experience transformation at a deeper level - the kind that touches their life and those around them.

And they want you to see them.

They need you to see them.

Not as another number or just an audience. But as individuals with stories, struggles, and dreams.

In Getting Clear on Your Vision, we talked about how clarity gives direction. Knowing who your vision helps is part of that clarity.

Knowing who your vision helps starts with really seeing them - beyond the surface, beyond the numbers.

When You See Them

When you take time to truly see the ones you’re meant to help, you build a kind of understanding that changes everything.

The kind that helps them see you as a vision that understands them - one that can help them, one that cares.

The kind that helps you put the right systems in place, shape the words that connect to their hearts, and meet them where they are.

The kind that encourages them to engage.

And the kind that helps you save time, energy, and resources - because you’ve stopped trying to reach everyone and start focusing on the ones your vision was meant for.

Clarity in who you serve gives direction to what you say and how you show up. It helps your vision stay aligned and connected - even when you’re refining, growing, or facing setbacks.

Seeing Them for Who They Are

It’s not just about identifying who they are.

It’s about understanding what they hope for, what they struggle with, and what they need most from what your vision offers.

With that in mind, here are three simple ways to see them more clearly:

Look beyond the outside

Demographics matter - they give you the frame. But their motivations and struggles paint the picture, see the full picture.

Don’t just look at their age, gender, title, or circumstance.

Go deeper.

  • What drives them?

  • What are they longing for or trying to become?

  • What’s standing in their way? How does this make them feel?

  • Does what you offer help them move forward?

  • What do they need from you?

And look beyond who you think they are.

Many visions that help others are born from personal experience - a pain you’ve walked through or observed that you don’t want others to carry. And that’s powerful. It gives you empathy and insight.

But if you rely only on what you’ve experienced, you may miss what they’re truly walking through today.

Listen between the lines

Pay attention to what they share - the questions they ask, the frustrations they mention, the hopes they express. That’s where you’ll find the clues to what they really need.

Ask yourself:

  • What do they say they want? What do they really want?

  • What do they say they’re struggling with? What’s underneath that?

Picture the one you help

Imagine one person your vision helps.

When you close your eyes and think about who your vision helps, who do you see?

Can you describe them?

This focus keeps your heart soft and reminds you who you’re doing this for.

Final Thoughts

When you see people for who they are - not just who you assume they are - your words start to connect, your impact deepens, and your vision grows stronger.

And don’t make it a one-time thing.

Keep paying attention. Keep listening.

The people your vision helps may grow and change - and so should your understanding of them.

Putting It into Action

Take 10 quiet minutes this week to reflect on who your vision helps.

Go beyond the surface - what do they really hope for? What do they need from you?

Write it down.

Revisit it often.

Because the clearer you see them, the stronger your vision’s impact will grow.
