Simple Can Be Hard to Trust

Making room to trust what you've already discerned and letting simple become familiar.

Calm, simply furnished living room with a magazine on a table and a pillow on the couch.

I don't like it.

I don’t like it when I know what I need to do.

What to listen to.

What to follow.

And still find myself questioning it.

Questioning the nudge.

That simple, quiet nudge as we build.

The nudge to stop adding.

The nudge when you're spreading yourself thin.

When something needs your attention.

When something can wait.

To stay with what matters most in this season.

I can notice them.

Even experience how much lighter building can feel when I listen.

And still question.

Ignore.

Because there are still responsibilities.

Needs.

Ideas.

Opportunities.

Requests.

Expectations.

There’s what matters most in this season.

And the other meaningful things don't disappear.

Sometimes it feels easier to ignore the nudges,

and return to the old patterns.

To what you know:

Do more.

Carry more.

Stay ahead.

Keep going.

Because that is what has always worked.

But if I'm honest, it never truly worked for me.

I got by.

I got things done.

But inside, I never felt settled.

Always scattered.

Always on.

Never really present.

Just pressure.

Pressure and guilt.

That’s not the place I wanted to be.

Not the place I wanted to build from.

What I want is peace.

To build with peace.

But still, the questions remain:

Did I hear right?

What if I get it wrong?

Shouldn’t I be doing more?

Is this really enough?

Can simple really work for me?

Simple Can Be Hard to Trust

Simplicity is building from a settled place of what matters most.

A settled place doesn't necessarily mean certainty.

A quiet knowing doesn't always arrive with a loud sense of certainty.

Sometimes a quiet knowing is all you have.

And simplicity asks you to trust what you've already discerned before you can see exactly where it will lead.

To believe that simple can actually work for you.

For the way you build.

For the vision you're carrying.

For this season.

And that everything that needs to be done doesn't mean you need to do it all.

That everything you care about doesn't mean you need to carry it all.

That everything that remains doesn't mean you need to tend it all right now.

That what matters will still matter,

even when you aren't holding all of it at once.

Maybe that's part of what makes simplicity hard.

Not recognizing it.

But trusting it enough to stay with it.

Because what becomes possible when you do?

You stop needing every step to make sense before taking the next one.

You stop adding simply because you're unsure.

You begin allowing what you've discerned to actually shape your decisions.

You begin more thoughtfully caring for what has been entrusted to you in this season,

and faithfully carrying forward what you've been entrusted to build today.

And slowly,

simple becomes less of something you're trying to achieve

and more of a way you're building.

Room to Trust What You’ve Noticed

Give yourself room to trust what you've noticed.

To notice without immediately ignoring it

or needing to prove that it's right.

Give yourself permission to try the simpler way.

To practice it.

See what works.

And adjust.

Give yourself permission not to override the nudge.

To not explain it away simply because something else feels louder.

Give yourself permission to let enough be enough.

To not add something simply because adding feels safer.

Give yourself permission to return when you drift.

If you find yourself adding again,

carrying again,

doing again,

that doesn't mean you've failed.

Or that the simpler way wasn't right.

You can notice it again.

You can return.

Give yourself permission to let simplicity become familiar

To let the simpler way settle.

Unfamiliar doesn't automatically mean wrong.

And you don't have to know yet

how this will change everything.

You can simply let it become familiar.

Not overnight.

One nudge.

One moment of listening.

One choice to follow at a time.

Final Thoughts

You don't have to become someone who cares less.

Or become perfectly certain.

You can trust what you've already discerned,

What matters most in this season.

And give the nudges room.

Because ignoring them doesn't make them disappear.

Sometimes they simply become harder to hear.

But when you listen and follow,

you can remain with what matters most.

And little by little,

simplicity becomes more familiar.

More settled.

More peaceful.

Perhaps it's the way you've always wanted to build.

Putting It into Action

This week, notice the nudges.

When you feel one, pause.

Listen.

And give yourself permission to follow it.

One nudge at a time.

If you're noticing places where you want to build more simply, but aren't sure how to trust what you're seeing, that's something I help purpose-driven builders work through.

If This Resonated with You

Sometimes building more simply, more faithfully begins by noticing the gentle, quiet nudges and giving yourself room to trust them.

If this met you where you are today, I'd love to hear what stood out to you. Feel free to share your thoughts below, and I'll respond.

And if you know another purpose-driven builder navigating many meaningful things in this season, feel free to pass it along.
